Digital Freeview Aerials

What is Freeview?

Freeview is a non-subscription service enabling customers to receive digital TV through an aerial without costly monthly payments.  This service is not to be confused with “Freesat” a similar product that receives its signals via the use of a Satellite Mini-Dish as opposed to a Terrestrial Aerial.

Since its launch in 2002 numerous TV channels have been added to its platform totalling to-date, around 50 Digital TV channels including 5 HD channels and 25 Digital Radio Stations.  No matter what you’re into there will always be something to watch across its entertainment, news, children’s and music channels.  Below are just a few of the channels you could expect to find on Freeview:

Freeview+ and Freeview HD

Freeview+ enables you to record a program, or a series to a built in hard drive within your Freeview box and watch them back at a later date.  On your recorded programs you are able to fast forward, rewind and pause, giving you complete control of what you are watching.  It also allows you to pause live TV, so when the phone rings you don’t have to miss your favourite programs!

Freeview HD (High Definition) is now available in some parts of the UK that have switched over to digital.  However in the majority of the Meridian area Freeview HD will not be available until the completion of the switchover in March 2012.  At that time you will be able to receive BBC, ITV and Channel 4 all in High Definition.

All Freeview products offer an on screen channel guide (EPG), enabling you to search through the weeks upcoming programs, set reminders and with Freeview+ record to a built in memory on the box.

How can I receive Freeview?

In order to watch Freeview you need to ensure you have a compatible Television Aerial and a Freeview receiver, or your TV has Freeview built in.  Chances are if you purchased your TV in the last couple of years you will have Freeview built in and not require any further equipment.  However, if this is not the case a separate Freeview Receiver / Box can be purchased typically from between £20 – £50 for a standard box.

If you want that little extra Freeview HD receivers can be purchased from £60 upwards and Freeview+ recordable receivers for around £100 upwards.
